The Nepal Intellectual Council has suggested that CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli step down from party leadership ahead of the general convention. On Ashwin 2, the council submitted a three-page letter urging Oli to transfer party leadership.
In the letter, signed by Council Chairman Gajendra Prasad Thapaliya and submitted to General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel, it was mentioned that leadership could be handed over through the Central Committee according to party statutes, without holding a general convention. The suggestion emphasizes that leaders like Oli should now take on a guiding role for the new generation.
Earlier, on Ashwin 12, most office-bearers at a Secretariat meeting at Oli’s residence in Gundu had also advised him to step down.
The UML has scheduled Secretariat meetings on Ashwin 19–20 and a Central Committee meeting from Ashwin 27–29 to discuss this matter. Decisions regarding the general convention are expected from these upcoming meetings.
