Landslides Block Nagdhunga–Muglin Highway; Hundreds of Vehicles Turned Back from Kathmandu

Due to continuous landslides on the road towards Dhading since Saturday morning, hundreds of vehicles attempting to leave Kathmandu via the Nagdhunga checkpoint were turned back by police.

Authorities, through public announcements, informed travelers that the route was risky due to landslides and there was no immediate possibility of reopening the road, urging them to return safely to Kathmandu.

According to the Nagdhunga Traffic Police Checkpost, by 9:30 AM, over 200 vehicles had already turned back. Police continuously broadcast messages urging travelers: “Landslides have occurred at various locations in Dhading. The road cannot be reopened immediately. Please return safely to Kathmandu.” Travelers complied with the request and began returning.

The Dhading District Police Office reported that around 2 AM, a major landslide occurred at Jawangkhola, Benighat-Rorang-10, blocking the Nagdhunga–Muglin highway. Although police, locals, and passengers temporarily cleared the road, another landslide around 6 AM fully stopped two-way traffic. The police warned that this incident has increased risks in other sections of the road.

Similarly, roads in Dhading and Tanahun considered high-risk have been closed to traffic since 6 AM. Police have been warning travelers not to use the Nagdhunga–Muglin route since early morning. At the main checkpoint in Nagdhunga, officers have been alerting travelers: “You cannot proceed further from here. Return to Kathmandu and stay safe.”

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, continuous rainfall in hilly areas has significantly increased the risk of landslides. Police advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys and check alternative routes. Road-clearing operations are ongoing with teams from police and the road department, but the timing for full traffic resumption remains uncertain.
