Flood in Roshi River Washes Away BP Highway Diversion, Road Fully Blocked

Continuous rainfall has caused flooding in the Roshi River, which has swept away the temporary diversion constructed along the BP Highway. With the diversion destroyed, the highway has been completely obstructed, cutting off the federal capital Kathmandu from the eastern Terai and hill districts.

According to Umesh Kumar Dhakal, Chief District Officer of Kavrepalanchok, although the BP Highway is fully blocked, no human casualties have been reported in the district so far due to floods, landslides, or heavy rainfall.

The flood has severely damaged sections of the road:

  • Buldhunga, Dalabesi (Roshi-11): around 110 meters washed away
  • Piple: around 50 meters
  • Katunje Ghumaune: around 20 meters
  • Chaukidanda: around 60 meters
  • Boksikhuna: around 200 meters

Police also reported landslides and mudslides in Mangalatar, Narke, and Pinthali. Inspector Ishwar Karki of Mangalatar Police Post stated that in some places, even pedestrian paths have disappeared, making it difficult to confirm the exact extent of road damage.

Meanwhile, Araniko Highway has also been blocked due to landslides. CDO Dhakal said rocks and debris fell near Dhulikhel Khawa, obstructing traffic. Landslides and mudslides have further blocked the highway near Dolalghat and at the 54-kilometer point.

Since Friday evening, heavy rainfall had continued until Sunday morning but has now decreased, lowering water flow in Roshi River (Panauti) and Punyamata River (Banepa). However, Banepa–Nala–Bhaktapur road section remains operational, traffic police reported.

To reopen the Araniko Highway, heavy equipment has been mobilized, according to Traffic Police Chief Inspector Sunil Dhanzu.
