Continuous rainfall has increased the risk of floods and landslides in Sunsari district. According to the District Police Office, around 1,036 houses have been inundated by floodwaters.
Spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yogaraj Khatri said rising streams and rivers have caused flooding in several municipalities and rural areas of the district. Most of the affected families have been temporarily relocated to safer areas.
In Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality–5, about 300 houses were submerged, while 160 houses in Barahachhetra Municipality–8 and more than 300 houses in Jalpapur, Inaruwa Municipality–10, were also flooded. Similarly, some houses in Inaruwa Wards 4, 8, 9, and 10, Ramdhuni Wards 6 and 7, and Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City Ward 5 were also inundated.
“Most of the flooded settlements are squatter areas, but they are not completely displaced. Security forces are keeping constant watch,” DSP Khatri said.
Floodwaters also entered Janodaya Basic School in Inaruwa–4 and the Cardio Neuro Hospital in Bhokraha. As the hospital premises were submerged, doctors had to be transported inside by boat with the help of the Armed Police Force.
Meanwhile, 45-year-old Navaraj Uraw was swept away by the Dovan stream in Barahachhetra–8, and search operations are ongoing, police reported.
Rescue and relief efforts are actively being carried out by Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, local governments, and other agencies. Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra said efforts are underway to relocate affected families, distribute relief, and take precautionary measures to prevent further damage.
Separately, the landslide that occurred last night in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City–13 along the Dharan–Bhedetar road section at Nisane has been cleared, and traffic has resumed.
